Floral Park is an incorporated village in western Nassau County, Long Island. Before it carried its present name, locals knew the section as East Hinsdale, and some reports say the first name was Plainfield, back when this was the western edge of the Hempstead Plains.
The name comes from a seed seller. John Lewis Childs arrived in 1874 to work for C.L. Allen, then built a seed and bulb business of his own and bought a great deal of land. He gave the local streets flower names and renamed the area Floral Park. By 1903 his flower beds covered more than 200 acres, and his mail-order volume was large enough that the post office drew comparisons with those in Chicago, Baltimore and Boston.
The Long Island Rail Road station followed the post office and became Floral Park in 1888. The area left Queens County for the new Nassau County in 1899, and the village incorporated in 1908 with Childs as its first Village President. Floral Park Village Hall was built in 1936.
Jericho Turnpike cuts through the village, and the section north of it belongs to the Town of North Hempstead instead of the Town of Hempstead. In 1960 the railroad was lifted onto an elevated viaduct as part of a grade-crossing project, and the Floral Park station was rebuilt up there.
Parts of the northern and western village boundaries touch New York City. The Queens neighborhood that shares the Floral Park name sits right beside the village but is not part of it. For rail, Elmont-UBS Arena station on the Long Island Rail Road Main Line is 1.0 miles from the village.
