The Oyster Bay Branch of the Long Island Rail Road opened in 1865 with a stop inside the hamlet, and an economic boom followed in the 1860s. A development corporation formed in 1892 for the northwestern section, calling the project Roslyn Highlands. It did poorly, and its western part kept the Highlands name while the eastern part was built as Roslyn Heights. By the late 1920s the whole area used the Heights name.
The post office opened on July 18, 1913, and has stood at 66 Mineola Avenue since 1967. The Roslyn part of the name traces back to the village of Roslyn, which got its name because the landscape reminded officials of Roslin, Scotland.
Politics shaped the borders. In 1931 the village of Roslyn proposed incorporation without Roslyn Heights, even though the hamlet had asked to join, and residents here fought the plan. Roslyn became a village in 1932 anyway. In 1948 Old Westbury voters, 81 to 6, agreed to give up about 375 acres, and Levitt & Sons later built the Roslyn Country Club section there.
Hillside Avenue is the hamlet's northern border with Roslyn, and it is also where the highest point sits, around 210 feet. The lowest ground is near the Wheatley Hills Golf Club in the southeast. The Northern State Parkway divides the Roslyn Country Club neighborhood from the rest of the hamlet, and that neighborhood twice floated the idea of becoming its own village, once over a plan to widen Roslyn Road.
In the northeastern part of the hamlet, the area around the Roslyn Long Island Rail Road station is known as Roslyn Plaza. That redevelopment started in the early 1970s, and ground was broken on its final phase in 1983. Roslyn Heights had 6,747 residents at the 2020 census.
