Wantagh (say it won-TAW) is a hamlet in the Town of Hempstead with 18,613 residents at the 2020 census. It is also known as "The Gateway to Jones Beach."
The hamlet carries the name of a leader. Wantagh was the sachem of the Merokee in 1647, then grand sachem of the Montauk from 1651 to 1658. Early settlers called the community Jerusalem, and the creek that ran through it was the Jerusalem River. Around the 1880s the place became Ridgewood, and a later rename to Wantagh cleared up confusion with another New York town of that name.
On April 21, 1790, George Washington passed through Jerusalem on a five-day tour of Long Island, and the town opened its first school that same year. Nine of Nassau County's 25 New York State Historical Markers stand here, among them Capt. John Seaman's 300-acre Cherrywood estate, dating to 1644, at Wantagh and Jerusalem avenues. In 2006 the Samuel and Elbert Jackson House was entered on the National Register of Historic Places.
Several of the old sites line Wantagh Avenue. The Jackson Cemetery sits just north of the Roman Catholic church of St. Frances de Chantal along that avenue and holds 63 confirmed graves. The 1666 Jackson House and the Grist Mill Site are both east of Riverside Drive on Merrick Road, and North Jerusalem Road, built in 1644, once linked Hempstead and Jerusalem.
