Woodbury is a hamlet in the Town of Oyster Bay, about 35 miles east of Midtown Manhattan, and it belongs to the Greater Syosset area that Syosset anchors. The 2020 census counted 9,335 residents, up from 9,010 in 2000. The hamlet covers 5.0 square miles, and just 0.32 percent of that is water.
Matinecock families lived here first. In the 17th century, European colonists, chiefly Dutch and English, began to settle the land.
The railroad arrived in 1868, when the line now called the Port Jefferson Branch was extended from Syosset east to Northport in Suffolk County. A Woodbury station opened on that branch in 1875, inside the hamlet. It closed sometime between 1901 and 1902, replaced by today's Cold Spring Harbor station, set slightly east of Woodbury near the Nassau-Suffolk line.
Notable people tied to Woodbury include Peter David, the comics writer who co-created Miguel O'Hara, Spider-Man 2099, the actress Tracy Pollan, who was raised in the hamlet, and the actor Adam Pascal, who grew up there.
Woodbury sits between neighbors on all four sides. Laurel Hollow borders it on the north, Plainview on the south, and Syosset on the west. South Huntington, West Hills and Cold Spring Harbor lie to the east.
One road defines the south end of the hamlet: the Northern State Parkway. A small stretch of the parkway and its right-of-way there is uninhabited, and it falls within a different library district from the rest of Woodbury. Everything inhabited belongs to the Syosset Library District, which the Syosset Public Library in Syosset serves.
The Woodbury Post Office uses ZIP 11797, the same ZIP we deliver to. A Cold Spring Harbor station took the old Woodbury stop's place, a short way east of the hamlet.
