Greenvale is a hamlet in Nassau County, on Long Island's North Shore, and it counts as part of the Greater Roslyn area. The 2020 census recorded 1,069 residents. It has gone by several names: Cedar Swamp until 1866, then Bull's Head into the early twentieth century, and North Roslyn at other points along the way.
The Greenvale Post Office opened on January 13, 1933, and it moved into its current building in 1976. Plenty of homes in the hamlet predate the Second World War, but the 1940s and 1950s brought new building near Roslyn Cemetery and along the railroad tracks of the Long Island Rail Road, around Park Avenue and Wellington Road.
The biggest change to the commercial map came in 1980, when Wheatley Plaza opened on the site of a former nursery called Wheatley Gardens. Castagna Realty, the owner of the Americana Manhasset, developed the center after first proposing it in 1977. Building it meant switching the land from residential use to business and parking use.
Greenvale is small: the census puts it at 0.3 square miles, all land. Most of it falls inside the Town of North Hempstead, and a small slice belongs to the Town of Oyster Bay.
Underfoot, the hamlet sits on the Harbor Hill Moraine, a ridge left by glaciers that runs along the North Shore. The moraine takes its name from Harbor Hill in Roslyn and East Hills, which is the highest natural point in Nassau County.
Rail riders know the name too. The Greenvale station on the Long Island Rail Road, between Roslyn and Brookville, is the stop for the C.W. Post Campus and the New York Institute of Technology. LIU Post itself is in Brookville, yet it uses the Greenvale ZIP Code and post office.
