Hempstead is a village in the Town of Hempstead, and its 59,169 residents at the 2020 census make it the biggest village in New York by population. Settlers from England and the Netherlands developed the towns of Hempstead and North Hempstead, and eventually Nassau County, from a seventeenth-century "town spot" located in the village. Part of Hofstra University lies inside the village.
In the fall of 1643, Robert Fordham and John Carman rowed across Long Island Sound to bargain for land, and in 1644 thirty to forty families from Stamford, Connecticut came to settle the site. The Presbyterian church they founded has been active longer than any other Presbyterian congregation in the country. The village incorporated on May 6, 1853, the first community in Queens County to do so.
In the late 1960s the Abraham & Straus store in Hempstead had the highest sales of any suburban department store in the country. From the 1940s to the 1960s, Hempstead was where Nassau County shopped. Prominent families such as the Vanderbilts and Belmonts built homes here, and between 1703 and 1705 St. George's Church was given a silver communion service by England's Queen Anne. In 1843 Benjamin F. Thompson reported 200 dwellings and 1,400 residents.
Every major county road in Nassau County radiates from Hempstead. Seventeen bus routes, plus three interstate buses, start from the village daily. The Long Island Rail Road's Hempstead Branch has its terminal here. In March 1898 Camp Black took shape on the Hempstead Plains as a training facility and embarkation point for troops heading to the Spanish-American War, and it opened on April 29, 1898.
