Levittown sits in the Town of Hempstead, midway between Hempstead and Farmingdale, both of them villages. The 2020 census counted 51,758 residents, more than any other unincorporated CDP in Nassau County and second on Long Island behind Brentwood.
The builder was Levitt & Sons, a firm Abraham Levitt founded on August 2, 1929. Between 1947 and 1951 it built the district as a planned neighborhood for veterans coming home from World War II. The project was first called Island Trees in 1947, and it was the first of four planned communities the firm named Levittown. Before building, William Levitt optioned wide stretches of onion and potato fields. He had served in the Navy's Seabees, its construction battalions, and came home with expertise in building military housing from uniform, interchangeable parts.
Speed defined the work. By July 1948 crews were finishing 30 houses a day, with each house divided into 26 steps handled by subcontractors. The company used pre-cut lumber and nails from its own factories in Blue Lake, California, and poured concrete slabs, which meant negotiating a change to the building code. Demand matched the pace: half of the first 2,000 rental homes were taken within two days of the May 7, 1947 announcement. Read more on Wikipedia.
Levittown never became a village or a city, though people tried the idea. In 1952, Carl Sigman, then campaigning for county executive, said incorporation as a city would be wise. It would have been the third city in Nassau County after Glen Cove and Long Beach. Residents had earlier suggested a village instead.
William Levitt took control of the firm in 1954 and is regarded as the father of modern suburbia across the country. The 4,000 extra homes added after the first rental phase brought postal delivery along with them.
