For decades this hamlet went by another name. Quaker Thomas Powell chose Bethpage after the biblical town Bethphage, and the land was part of the 1695 Bethpage Purchase. A rail stop called Jerusalem Station opened here between 1851 and 1854, and a post office carrying the same name opened on January 29, 1857. Residents pushed for a change, and the post office became Central Park on March 1, 1867.
The switch to Bethpage came after Bethpage State Park opened in 1932. The post office took the new name on October 1, 1936, and the neighboring community that already used the name resisted a merger and became Old Bethpage.
Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation ran here from 1936 until 1994, building the F-14 Tomcat and the Apollo Lunar Excursion Module, which is why the 1995 film Apollo 13 mentions Bethpage. The 2020 census counted 16,658 residents. Early in the 1900s a small Scandinavian immigrant village called Swedetown stood north of Cherry Avenue, and a historical marker for it was unveiled in August 2021 at Flamingo Lane and Caffrey Avenue. The old clubhouse on Stewart Avenue is now Saint Isidoro's Greek Orthodox Church.
Bethpage lies about 30 miles east of Midtown Manhattan and 13 miles east of the Queens border. Plainview is its northern neighbor. Buses on the NICE system run along Hempstead Turnpike. The Bethpage State Parkway runs north from North Massapequa, where it meets the Southern State Parkway at a trumpet interchange, and ends at a traffic circle with Plainview Road inside Bethpage State Park.
