Port Washington sits on the Cow Neck Peninsula, where the Matinecock lived before Dutch and English colonists bought land from them and settled in 1644. In the 1870s the hamlet became a sand-mining town. Its sandbank was the biggest one east of the Mississippi River, and barges could reach Manhattan easily. Roughly 140 million cubic yards of the local sand went into the concrete for city skyscrapers, including the Empire State and Chrysler buildings, and into the subway. In 1998 the old mine sites became Harbor Links, a golf course.
The railroad followed. Residents lobbied the Long Island Rail Road in 1895, and the extension from Great Neck opened on June 23, 1898, with the Manhasset and Port Washington stations. A trolley line connected the hamlet with Roslyn and Mineola from 1908 until the company collapsed in 1920.
Port Washington has its own police district. It formed in 1921, and as of 2025 it is the last special district police department left in New York state.
Main Street is the main east-west thoroughfare through downtown, and it got that name in 1912 after being called Flower Hill Avenue. In 1908 North Hempstead put the Port Washington Town Dock into service on Manhasset Bay, and it became a major destination for decades. Sunset Park came along in 1916.
From 1930 to 1939 a ferry crossed Long Island Sound between the Manorhaven area and New Rochelle, until the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge opened and made the service obsolete. Today the Port Washington Branch is the rail link, and the hamlet is the end of that line. The hamlet is home to 16,753 people as of the 2020 census.
