Hardscrabble, a General Store and the 1841 Station
Farmingdale is an incorporated village in the Town of Oyster Bay, about 37 miles southeast of Midtown Manhattan, and the 2020 census counted 8,466 residents. Thomas Powell arrived in 1687 as the first European settler in the area. His Bethpage Purchase came on October 18, 1695: a 15-square-mile tract bought from three Native American tribes that covers what is now Farmingdale. One of the houses he built, from about 1738, still stands on Merritts Road.
The name came from a store. In the 1830s a developer named Ambrose George bought a large tract between what is now Old Bethpage and the Suffolk County area called Hardscrabble, then opened a general store he called Farmingdale. When the Long Island Rail Road started service in October 1841, it gave its new station the same name.
Village life took shape quickly. A fire department was organized in 1886, and in 1899 the cyclist Mile-a-Minute Murphy pedaled the LIRR's Central Branch through the area at one mile per minute. The Hardscrabble Fair, held in May with music, food and games, celebrated the community's birth for many years. In 1904, after a referendum, Farmingdale incorporated as a village. Around the time of World War II, the area became a center for aircraft manufacturing, with Republic Aviation Company the lead name, based at Republic Airport in East Farmingdale. Farmingdale State College is in East Farmingdale too.
