Manetto Hill, Cucumbers and the Potato Blight
A Welsh settler, Robert Williams, bought land here in 1648, which is where Plainview's story begins. Farmers wanted it because of a small pond that local Native Americans called the Moscopas. In 1695 Thomas Powell bought the rest of the land as part of the Bethpage Purchase, and the settlement became known as Manetto Hill.
Mail changed the name. Residents asked for a local post office in 1885 and were refused because a similar name was already used upstate, so the hamlet became Plainview, named for the outlook across the Hempstead Plains from the high ground of the Manetto Hills.
Farming defined the next chapter. Plainview grew cucumbers for the large Heinz pickle factories in nearby Farmingdale and Hicksville until blight hit the crop in the early 1900s and many farmers turned to potatoes. The end of World War II added another push: a potato blight and the wish of returning soldiers to leave New York City persuaded many farmers to sell.
