From Hick's Neck to Milburn to Baldwinsville to Baldwin
Baldwin is a hamlet in the Town of Hempstead, and it had 33,919 residents in 2020. The Meroke, a band of Lenape people, were the original inhabitants of the stretch between Parsonage Creek and Milburn Creek.
English colonists began calling the area Hick's Neck in 1643, and a grist mill that John Pine built on Milburn Creek in 1686 drew more settlers. Milburn first shows up in documents in 1839. The village was formally founded in 1855 under the name Baldwinsville, a nod to merchant Thomas Baldwin, and the Postal Service later shortened it to Baldwins to avoid confusion with an upstate Baldwinsville. By 1892 the name was officially Baldwin. After Hempstead split from Queens County in 1899, people moved in, and realtor Charles Luerssen billed the place as "Beautiful Baldwin."
Baldwin was the biggest unincorporated village in New York State by 1939, ten years after Sunrise Highway opened, but Levittown had taken that distinction by 1960.
Merrick Road, Seaman Avenue and the Hamlet's Parks
Thomas Baldwin also ran a hotel on what would now be the corner of Merrick Road and Grand Avenue, on its northwest side. In May 1910 the brothers Arthur and Albert Heinrich designed, built and flew the first all-American monoplane on a site at Seaman Avenue and Rockville Drive. Its controls were combined into one stick, so a pilot could fly it with one hand.
Parks in Baldwin include Milburn Pond Park and Coes Neck Park, and the others are Lofts Pond Park and Silver Lake Park, which Oceanside shares. Since the 1990 census, the area south of Atlantic Avenue has been counted as Baldwin Harbor, yet it still shares Baldwin's postal code and libraries. The Baldwin station on the Babylon Branch is the nearest on our list, about 1.0 miles away.
