Lawrence is a village in the Town of Hempstead, and the 2020 census counted 6,809 people there. It borders Queens to the west and lies near Reynolds Channel to the south.
A rail line from New York City through the Five Towns was finished in 1869, and three brothers surnamed Lawrence bought part of the land nearby, which is where the village name comes from. Wealthy families treated Lawrence as a main vacation spot for much of the second half of the 19th century, until the 1890s. Then hurricanes and nor'easters reshaped the coast and destroyed a large beachfront hotel.
Old Lawrence, also called Back Lawrence, is a section of the village with large homes, mansions and former plantations, a few from the time of the American Revolution. Lawrence incorporated as a village in 1897. Two older anchors stand out. Rock Hall, built in colonial times, is now an active museum. From the 1940s to the 1980s, Temple Israel, the largest Reform synagogue on Long Island, helped make Lawrence a hub of Reform and Conservative Jewish life.
