Foster's Meadow to Belmont Park: How Elmont Got Its Name and Its Track
Elmont is an unincorporated hamlet in northwestern Hempstead, on the Queens border, with 35,265 residents at the 2020 census. Christopher and Thomas Foster bought a large plot in 1650, and the name Foster's Meadow stuck for roughly 200 years. Long Island was split into three counties in 1683, and Foster's Meadow began in Queens County. The current boundaries of Elmont were decided in 1898, when Nassau County was created. The community was renamed Elmont in 1882.
Belmont Park opened in 1905, and the farms around it were sold off and subdivided for houses. In 1910 the track hosted the first air race in the United States, an international contest staged by Wilbur and Orville Wright. Belmont Park was named the New York terminal for the first inter-city Air Mail Service to Washington, D.C. in 1918.
