Point Lookout is a small hamlet in the Town of Hempstead, and 1,527 residents were counted there in the 2020 census. It is mostly homes, with a few small businesses on Lido Boulevard, and water surrounds it on three sides. Summer residences are common, and locals call the place PLO.
The first known inhabitants were Merrick (Meroke) people, followed by Dutch settlers in the 1640s and English settlers in the 1660s. In 1906 a group led by Brooklyn's Senator William Reynolds bought the whole barrier island. In the 1920s his Point Lookout Inc. added concrete streets and divided the land into small plots for families. Bungalows that survived the fire at Nassau By the Sea, along with others from marsh islands, were moved here and can still be seen around the community.
A United States Life-Saving Service Station opened at Point Lookout in 1872. Ferries from the Woodcleft Canal in Freeport once brought day-trippers to its beaches, and hotels and seasonal bungalows rose and then fell to winter storms and fire.
