Washington's Breakfast Stop and a Fifth Try at Incorporation
Roslyn started out as Matinecock land, and Dutch and English colonists settled it in 1643 under the name Hempstead Harbor. The community was renamed Roslyn in 1844 because the many Hempsteads around Long Island kept confusing the post office.
George Washington had breakfast at mill owner Hendrick Onderdonk's home on April 24, 1790. That farmhouse still stands on Old Northern Blvd as Hendrick's Tavern. The Ellen E. Ward Memorial Clock Tower, among the village's most famous structures, went up in 1895, and in 1931 Gerry Park opened over a former swamp.
Incorporation took five tries. The final petition went to the Town of North Hempstead on October 16, 1931, and the referendum passed by 38 votes to 37. Roslyn became a village on January 11, 1932, with Albertson W. Hicks as its first mayor.
Old Northern Boulevard, Bryant Avenue and the Viaduct
Old Northern Boulevard runs through downtown Roslyn, and Bryant Avenue is where William Cullen Bryant, who lived at Cedarmere, put up Bryant Hall in 1874 so the public would have a place to read, and the library found its permanent home in 1952 at Papermill Road's Roslyn War Memorial Building.
Traffic began crossing the William Cullen Bryant Viaduct on January 3, 1950, as part of the Roslyn Bypass. The village station for the Oyster Bay Branch first opened near Warner Avenue in 1865, in what is now Roslyn Heights. The 2020 census counted 2,988 residents in the village.
