During the Revolutionary War the Townsend family owned Raynham Hall. From 1778 to 1779, British troops used it as headquarters for the Queen's Rangers under Lt. Col. John Graves Simcoe. Theodore Roosevelt later settled at Sagamore Hill, completed in 1886, and lived there until he died in 1919. His wife Edith stayed until September 1948, and on July 25, 1962, Congress created the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site to protect the house.
The Oyster Bay History Walk, West Shore Road and the 1889 Railroad
Rail service reached town on June 21, 1889, when the first Long Island Rail Road train pulled in. The Oyster Bay Main Street Association built an audio tour called the Oyster Bay History Walk to guide visitors past the sites. Stops include Snouder's Drug Store, where the first telegraph in town was installed, and Moore's Building, now the Wild Honey restaurant. The Octagon Hotel, built in 1851, once held offices of Governor Roosevelt.
Roads matter here too. When Hurricane Sandy struck in 2012, West Shore Road was demolished, and for four years, on and off, drivers between Bayville and Oyster Bay detoured through Mill Neck while crews rebuilt it.
