Rockville Centre, often shortened to RVC, is an incorporated village in the Town of Hempstead, and the 2020 census counted 26,016 residents. People have lived on the site for thousands of years, and the prehistoric Woodlands period East River culture is believed to be the Algonkian-speaking ancestor of western Long Island's historical tribes. The Canarsie, Recouwacky (Rockaway), Matinecock and Massapequa, all Lenape descendants, held territory across what is now western Long Island, including today's Queens and Nassau counties.
By 1643 roughly thirteen Algonquin bands lived east of the Dutch and English settlements. In 1640 the Reckouakie left their land around present-day Rockaway to Dutch Governor Kieft, and most of them settled to the east, in the area that became Rockville Centre. Disputes over a 1639 treaty led to many conflicts and then four years of fighting. The Reckonhacky, or Rockaway, signed a peace treaty dated May 24, 1645.
The hamlet got the Rockville Centre name in 1849, after Mordecai "Rock" Smith, a local Methodist preacher and community leader, and it became an incorporated village in 1893. Around the turn of the twentieth century the Long Island Rail Road made it a commuter town for New York. In 1989 the Rockville Centre Post Office earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.
