Mineola is the county seat of Nassau County. Locals named the community in 1858 after an Algonquin chief, Miniolagamika, whose name means "Pleasant Village," and the spelling was later shortened. The Long Island Rail Road arrived in 1839, and a year later John A. Searing built the Mineola Hotel across from the station.
