In Nassau County's Town of Hempstead lies the village of Malverne, where 8,560 residents were counted in the 2020 census. Rockaway Indians settled the land long before European farmers did, and the current Ocean Avenue began as one of their paths. The Abrams, Bedell and Pearsall families started farming here in the 1700s.
The place was first called Norwood, and a vote in the early 1920s created the incorporated village. Incorporation was finalized on April 13, 1921, although the village had been acting as one since October 1920. Norwood had to go because a village of that name already existed upstate, so developer Alfred Wagg, who had visited Malvern, England, supplied the replacement. Nobody has an accepted reason for the extra e in the spelling.
Malverne runs most of its own services. The board of trustees is chaired by the mayor, and the village itself operates the police department, volunteer fire department, ambulance corps, public library and a local TV station called MalverneTV. Crossroads Farm at Grossman's, acquired by Nassau County, still operates as a working farm, the last one in the village. More than 3000 homes stand in Malverne today, many built by the Amsterdam Development Corporation.
Two Long Island Rail Road stations sit inside Malverne: Malverne and Westwood, both on the West Hempstead Branch. Many residents commute to New York City by train, and weekend service on the branch returned in November 2014 after a three-year break. The nearest stations on our list are Malverne, about 0.2 miles away, and Westwood, about 0.7 miles away.
Ocean Avenue, the old path, runs through the village, and some neighborhood names survive in street names because the village was stitched together from separate farm communities.
