Garden City began in 1869, when the Irish-born millionaire Alexander Turney Stewart bought part of the lightly populated Hempstead Plains. His Garden City Hotel was the community's first big draw. A replacement designed by McKim, Mead & White arrived in 1895, burned in 1899, was rebuilt, and gave way to the current hotel in 1983. Stewart also backed the Central Railroad of Long Island, which opened in 1873.
The press at first called the project "Stewart's Folly" because so few residents showed up. The Gothic Cathedral of the Incarnation, founded by his wife Cornelia, holds both of their graves, and the memorial was finished in 1885.
The twentieth century added Doubleday, whose publishing operation moved to Franklin Avenue in 1910, and aviation: the Nassau Boulevard Aerodrome was the site of the Second International Aviation Meet in 1911. Garden City incorporated as a village in 1919.
Starting in the 1930s, branches of Lord & Taylor, Bloomingdale's and Saks Fifth Avenue opened along Franklin Avenue. They have since closed, and the big buildings were turned into offices. Several moved to the Roosevelt Field Mall, which replaced the old Hempstead Aerodrome in the 1950s.
Three golf courses are in the village, and the first was laid out in 1896 as the Garden City Golf Club. For trains, Merillon Avenue station, served by Port Jefferson Branch trains, is 0.9 miles from the village, and Mineola station is 1.0 miles away.
