William J. Levitt, a developer, purchased 19 acres near the Carle Place train station in 1946 and tried something new. His crews trucked in pre-cut lumber and quickly put up 600 low-cost houses. The pitch was affordable suburban living and a simple commute to jobs in New York City. Veterans returning home brought their families, and within five years the population had jumped by 500 percent. The project served as the prototype for Levittown, which Levitt started the next year a few miles away.
The hamlet takes its name from the Carle House, a 32-room home Silas Carle built in Westbury in the 1800s. People called it the Carle Place, and the surrounding area picked up the name. The house still stands near Jericho Turnpike and Carle Road.
Other names have come and gone. From about 1895 to 1915 the area was Mineola Park, after a real estate development that failed. The old name returned in 1915, and a 1951 proposal to change it again lost. Frog Hollow is another old name for the hamlet, and people still use it in casual talk. St. Mary's Chapel earned a place on the New York state historic register in 1999, and a National Register of Historic Places listing followed in 2005.
Carle Place covers 0.935 square miles. Old Country Road marks the southern border, which also serves as part of the line between the Town of North Hempstead and the Town of Hempstead, and Carle Road marks the eastern border. Most of the western border with Mineola follows the old Long Island Motor Parkway alignment. Mineola, Garden City, Old Westbury and Westbury are the bordering villages.
Carle Place station on the Port Jefferson Branch is 0.4 miles from the hamlet. Many residents commute into New York City for work, which is why the hamlet is described as a bedroom community, though some areas are zoned for commercial, retail and industrial use. Carle Place had a 2020 census population of 5,005.
