The first people here were the Marsapeaques, who called the area "Great Water Land." Europeans arrived with Captain John Seaman, who came from Seaford in East Sussex, England. After he obtained the patent, the community was first called Jerusalem South and was also widely known as Seaman's Neck. In 1868 it took the name Seaford, a nod to his hometown.
Seaford stayed agricultural through the 1800s even as the Long Island Rail Road helped other villages grow. A one-room school stood here, and that building later served as the first firehouse, then by 1976 became the Seaford Historical Museum. The real change came with Sunrise Highway in 1929: the community had about 1,200 residents before the road opened, and within 25 years that number tripled. The 2020 census counted 15,251 people.
Water shaped the local economy. In the middle of the 1800s, baymen from Seaford built the Seaford skiff, a small boat with a rounded bottom that they used for fishing and market gunning. Two hotels went up along Merrick Road, the Powell Hotel at Jackson Avenue and the Sportsman's Hotel near Route 135, and guests such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Jacob Ruppert came to hunt ducks in South Oyster Bay.
Today Seaford has green space of its own. Nassau County owns Cedar Creek Park, Tackapausha Preserve and Washington Avenue Park, while the Town of Hempstead maintains Aron Drive Park, Estella Park and Seaman's Neck Park.
