Rum Junction, Cookie Hill and Skunks Misery: Valley Stream's Old Names
Valley Stream's early map was full of nicknames. Taverns gave the Rockaway Avenue business strip its label, Rum Junction. The northern section went by Cookie Hill, and the northeastern patch beside the fertilizer plant was Skunks Misery. Hungry Harbor, a section that kept its name, once housed a squatters' community.
The Dutch West India Company bought the land from Rockaway Native Americans in 1640. By 1840 the census listed about 20 families, most of them owning large farms. Robert Pagan chose the name Valley Stream, and the U.S. Post Office formally accepted it in 1843. The Village of Valley Stream incorporated on February 14, 1925.
Merrick Road, Gibson Station and the Long Island Rail Road
In 1853, a single road, Hempstead Turnpike, tied Valley Stream to Jamaica and the city. Merrick Road was built through the village that same year. Starting in 1869, South Side Railroad trains made a stop in the village, and a branch to the Rockaways became today's Far Rockaway Branch. In 1910, the Long Beach Branch reached Valley Stream.
Developer William R. Gibson arrived in 1922, and Gibson station opened on May 29, 1929, carrying his name. Three Long Island Rail Road stations serve the village: Valley Stream, Gibson and Westwood.
