Old Bethpage began with a large land deal. Thomas Powell bought roughly 10,000 acres from local tribes in 1695, a tract known as the Bethpage Purchase that stretches roughly 3.5 miles from east to west and 5 miles from north to south. He named it Bethphage because it lay between Jericho and Jerusalem, as the biblical town did, and his 14 children later split the land into farming communities.
Industry followed. A railroad spur finished in 1873 carried bricks from a brickworks on Battle Row to build Garden City, and the brickyard kept running until 1981. William Kissam Vanderbilt II began building the Long Island Motor Parkway in 1908, among the nation's earliest highways, and it eventually stretched 45 miles from Queens to Lake Ronkonkoma.
The name has its own story. Robert Moses, then Long Island State Parks Commissioner, oversaw the 1932 opening of Bethpage State Park, and when the neighboring hamlet of Central Park took the Bethpage name in 1936, the original Bethpage resisted a merger and became Old Bethpage. It did not get its own post office until 1965. The 2020 census counted 5,283 residents, and the hamlet shares a library, a fire department and a water district with Plainview.
Street names still point to the parkway: Vanderbilt Lane, Motor Parkway and Toll Place. Pieces of the old roadbed and a few bridges survive at the Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Bethpage State Park and Battle Row Campground. Bethpage State Park covers 1,400 acres and sits almost entirely inside the hamlet, even though some people mistakenly assume it belongs to Bethpage.
The park explains the area's numbers. At 4.1 square miles, Old Bethpage is much smaller than Plainview, which has about five times the population, because large parts here are parks and undeveloped land. In 1960 the county announced the Nassau County Fire Service Academy on Winding Road.

Adults 21 and older stay within the law by carrying no more than 3 ounces of cannabis and 24 grams of concentrate.
