Massapequa Park is an incorporated village in the southern part of the Town of Oyster Bay, and the 2020 census counted 17,109 residents. In the 1800s, German families moved here from Brooklyn, and the settlement was known as Wurtenberg or Stadtwurtemburg. The Woodcastle Hotel was the draw: a rooming house put up in 1868 on Front Street beside the fire department and used as a summer resort. A fire destroyed it in 1952, and houses took its place.
The Irish chapter came next. The New York Times advertised the development in 1928, which was created by a real estate firm owned by Peter Colleran, Frank Cryan and Michael J. Brady. These Irish-Americans pitched it as having a bit of Old Erin, and the blocks between Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road still carry mostly Irish street names. In 1931 the community incorporated as a village to keep control over land use. Several dozen Sears Roebuck kit houses went up in two areas, including some of the largest models the company offered. The village once had its own airport. Fitzmaurice Flying Field was named in 1929 for James Fitzmaurice, part of the three-person crew that made the first east-to-west flight across the Atlantic. An estimated 100,000 people came to its dedication on Spruce Street. The Nassau County Police Academy now stands on part of the former field.
Today the village owns and runs three main parks: Mansfield Park, Brady Park and Colleran Park. It covers 1.6 square miles, and South Oyster Bay lies along its southern edge. East Massapequa lies east, Massapequa west, North Massapequa northwest and South Farmingdale north. Our station data lists the Massapequa Park station on the Babylon Branch about 0.5 miles away.
