Near Rockaway, a Grist Mill on the Mill River and a Village Chartered in 1900
East Rockaway occupies the eastern edge of the Rockaway Peninsula in the Town of Hempstead, and its 2020 population was 10,159. The village started out as Near Rockaway, a hub for shipping and trade on Long Island's South Shore, and its deep inland channels made it attractive to ships.
In 1688 Joseph Haviland received a land grant and built a grist mill on the Mill River. In 1998 the Haviland-Davison Grist Mill, which stands in Memorial Park, earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. The Near Rockaway name gave way to East Rockaway in 1869, and the village incorporated in 1900 with 969 residents.
Ocean Avenue, Atlantic Avenue and the Long Beach Branch Stations
Both of East Rockaway's Long Island Rail Road stations are on the Long Beach Branch. One sits between Ocean Avenue and Atlantic Avenue; the Centre Avenue stop is northwest of it. A third stop on Atlantic Avenue existed until 1951. The nearest station on our list is Lynbrook on the Long Beach Branch, about 1.0 miles away.
Oceanside, Lynbrook, Rockville Centre, Hewlett and Hewlett Harbor all touch the village, which measures 1.03 square miles. The John Street Complex gives it a baseball diamond, a pair of basketball courts and a concession stand.
