The name Massapequa means "great water land." The first people here were Algonquian speakers, the Massapequa, one of 13 tribes on Long Island. Around 1658, Oyster Bay merchants deceived Chief Tackapausha into selling the land, and his attempts to fix the misunderstanding failed.
Older traces turn up too. In 1969, drainage work at Massapequa Lake revealed a cache of 184 jasper blades laid in rows just below the surface, dated to roughly 75 BCE through 400 CE. In the 1930s, work in the Harbor Green area uncovered burials, and Sunset Park now preserves the Fort Massapeag Archeological Site, which was named a National Historic Landmark in 1993.
Resort life arrived with the railroad. The 300-room Massapequa Hotel, a summer resort, went up in 1888 below Merrick Road on Ocean Avenue and closed in 1914.
