From Musketa Cove Plantation to a City Since 1918

Glen Cove is a city on the North Shore of Long Island, in Nassau County. The 2020 census counted 28,365 residents, the highest decennial total it has ever recorded. Just two of the county's five municipalities are cities rather than towns, and Glen Cove is one of them. Long Beach is the other.

The settlement began with a land deal. Joseph Carpenter, from Warwick in Rhode Island, bought about 2,000 acres from the Matinecock on May 24, 1668. He soon took on four partners from Oyster Bay, and the group known as The Five Proprietors named the place Musketa Cove Plantation, a Lenape phrase meaning "place of rushes." The name did not last. Residents associated Musketa with the English word mosquito, and in 1834 they officially changed it to Glen Cove.

Independence came later. After 250 years under the Town of Oyster Bay, Glen Cove broke away on January 1, 1918 and became a city. Residents wanted their tax money spent locally, and the town's police and road service for Glen Cove were seen as inadequate. Glen Cove skipped the village stage entirely: it became a city without ever incorporating as a village.

Steamboats, the 1867 Railroad and the Gold Coast Estates

Transportation built Glen Cove. Starting in the 1830s, steamboats ran regularly across Long Island Sound from New York City to Musketa Cove, docking at a spot still called The Landing. By 1850, the community had turned into a summer resort for New Yorkers, and the Long Island Rail Road reached Glen Cove in 1867, which brought quicker and more frequent trips to the city.

Wealthy industrialists followed, drawn by views of rolling hills from the Sound. Charles Pratt and his sons, F.W. Woolworth and Charles Anderson Dana built large estates along the North Shore, part of what people started calling the Gold Coast of Nassau County in the 1920s. The city received part of the Morgan property as a donation, and it now serves as Morgan Park and Beach.

Several estates have found new roles. John Teele Pratt's estate, The Manor, now operates as a hotel and conference center under the Glen Cove Mansion name. Herbert L. Pratt's estate, The Braes, was bought by the Webb Institute in 1945. In 1951 the Soviet Union purchased Killenworth, the George DuPont Pratt estate, and in 1960 Nikita Khrushchev and Fidel Castro stayed there during UN meetings. Winfield Hall, F.W. Woolworth's former estate, remains privately owned. The old Oyster Bay courthouse is now the North Shore Historical Museum.
