Freeport is a village in the Town of Hempstead on Nassau County's South Shore, and its 44,472 residents at the 2020 census make it New York's second biggest village by headcount. People have settled here since the 1640s. It began as an oystering community and later became a resort for New York City's theater crowd.
The land first belonged to the Meroke. Edward Raynor, a herdsman who came over from Hempstead in 1659, cleared ground and built a cabin there, and the area ended up called Raynortown. Residents voted in 1853 to rename the village Freeport, a variant of a nickname ship captains used because they paid no customs duties landing cargo.
Oystering turned commercial after the Civil War. The Southside Railroad arrived in 1868, and developer John J. Randall's canals include the Woodcleft Canal, where one bank now holds the Nautical Mile. The village incorporated on October 18, 1892, and by the early twentieth century vaudeville performers had made Freeport a summer colony.
Randall opposed laying out all of Freeport on a grid. As a protest against the grid designers, he put up a Victorian house almost overnight on a triangular plot at Lena Avenue and Wilson Place. The Freeport Spite House still stands and is occupied.
From 1902 trolleys ran down Main Street to ferries that carried passengers to the ocean beach at Point Lookout, south of the village. The Freeport station on the Babylon Branch is the nearest on our list, about 0.3 miles away. Freeport has run its own municipal electric utility since 1898, and Nassau County has two municipally owned electric systems, Freeport's and Rockville Centre's.
