A Gristmill, the Motor Parkway and a Levitt Start
Connecticut native John Seren arrived in 1644 as the first European settler. Townsend Albertson later ran a farm and a gristmill, and the hamlet took his name. A road laid through the hamlet in 1850 on land owned by Isaac Underhill Willets still carries his initials as I.U. Willets Road, and the Long Island Rail Road opened a station in Albertson in 1864.
The Long Island Motor Parkway came through in 1908, closed in 1938, and was replaced in 1940 by the Northern State Parkway. Suburban growth began in 1946, when William Levitt built a small development. In 1950 the Hillside Terrace-at-Albertson development filled 55 acres, on ground that had held Bloodgood Nurseries. It brought roughly 322 detached houses plus a big shopping center.
By the mid-1960s the last farms had given way to housing and businesses, and the hamlet had turned fully suburban.
I.U. Willets Road, Willis Avenue and the Parkway Borders
On the northwest corner where Willis Avenue meets I.U. Willets Road stands The Shoppes at Willets Crossing. The Albertson Fire District built its present headquarters on I.U. Willets Road in 1953. The Northern State Parkway forms the border with Roslyn Heights on the north, and the old Motor Parkway alignment forms the border with Williston Park to the south.
