Before colonists arrived, a Matinecock village stood on Manhasset Bay. They called the area Sint Sink, "place of small stones," and made wampum from oyster shells. The Dutch West India Company claimed the land in 1623, and a land purchase in 1643 let English settlers return to Cow Neck, the peninsula that holds Manhasset and Port Washington.
The peninsula earned its name as grazing land. By 1659 more than 300 cows lived there behind a fence five miles long, and the settlers agreed that each could keep one cow per section of fence he had built. The fence came down in 1677, and Manhasset was known as Little Cow Neck for a time.
The Manhasset name arrived in 1840. The Long Island Rail Road reached the hamlet in 1898, and North Hempstead Town Hall opened on Plandome Road in 1907, which makes Manhasset the town seat. Manhasset's 2020 population was 8,176.
North Hempstead Town Hall sits in the downtown along Plandome Road. Northern Boulevard began life as the North Hempstead Turnpike, a toll road that opened in 1801, when the trip between Roslyn and Spinney Hill cost two cents.
Manhasset station gives riders a rail link to Penn Station and Grand Central, and the hamlet is 19.5 miles from midtown Manhattan. The ground here sits on the Harbor Hill Moraine, a ridge left by glaciers, and Harbor Hill in Roslyn is the highest point in Nassau County.
