Oceanside is a hamlet on the southern side of the Town of Hempstead, and 32,637 people lived there at the 2020 census. It was first known as South Bay, and in 1674 the English government set up a township called Christian Hook, a name based on the religion of the colonists living there. Oyster sales soon became a major business, with Mott's Landing a favored spot to buy them.
Residents decided Oceanville sounded better than Christian Hook, since Oceanville Oysters sold well, and the new name became official in 1864. Another Oceanville already existed in New York, so OceanSide was adopted as one word in 1890, and the name was condensed to Oceanside in 1918. The place does not front the Atlantic: Reynolds Channel, marsh islands and the Long Beach Barrier Island separate it from the ocean.
Between the early 1900s and the late 1970s the community was built over swampland, which turned a small port into a large hamlet. The population climbed to nearly 30,000 by the end of the 1990s. Hurricane Sandy struck in 2012 and flooded the southern part of the hamlet, and a 2016 blizzard dropped nearly 2 feet of snow.
The second Nathan's Famous restaurant ever opened on Long Beach Road in Oceanside on June 4, 1959. By 2016 Nathan's had downsized to a smaller spot, still on Long Beach Road. The Oceanside Fire Department formed in 1909, and an old firehouse still stands where Lincoln Avenue meets Long Beach Road, at the triangle's southwest corner.
The hamlet covers 5.4 square miles, of which 5.0 are land. In 2025 Oceanside tore down its old library and rebuilt it with two floors, making it more spacious and modern.
