Inwood was first settled in the 1600s, when the area still went by the name Near Rockaway. Its first settlers were Jamaica Bay fishermen. At a Town of Hempstead meeting on January 16, 1663, the spot was renamed North West Point.
Two more names followed. By 1871 the community was called Westville, but the post office refused that name because there was already a Westville in upstate New York. Locals picked Inwood in December 1888, and the post office finally opened on February 25, 1889.
Today the hamlet sits in Nassau County as part of the Five Towns, inside the Town of Hempstead. The 2020 census counted 11,340 residents.
The hamlet covers 2.1 square miles. On its north and west sides it meets Queens. The Nassau Expressway, Route 878, cuts through the middle of the hamlet. The Inwood end of Lord Avenue was the first true road in the area, built when neighboring Lawrence was developed. The hamlet faces John F. Kennedy International Airport across Head of the Bay.
The Inwood station on the Long Island Rail Road's Far Rockaway Branch sits toward the southern edge of the hamlet and runs direct trains to Jamaica. Nassau County runs Inwood Park, a bayside park with a launching pad into Mott's Basin. Inwood Country Club hosted the 1921 PGA Championship and the 1923 U.S. Open. This background is drawn from Wikipedia's Inwood article.
