West Hempstead is an unincorporated hamlet in the Town of Hempstead, home to 19,835 people at the 2020 census. The name first appeared on maps in 1893, as the label for a Long Island Rail Road station. Halls Pond Park, the main park in the hamlet, was dedicated by Nassau County in 1961, and the smaller Echo Park has a public indoor pool.
Echo Park is named for the first four little league teams in town: the Eagles, Cardinals, Hawks and Orioles. In 1962 a West Hempstead team represented the east at the Senior League world series, defeating a club from New London, Ohio by 3-2 to reach the final and then La Habra, California by 8-2.
