Locust Valley is a census-designated hamlet in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County. It had 3,571 residents in the 2020 census. The hamlet covers 0.9 square miles, nearly all of it land.
Its origin story starts with a purchase. Captain John Underhill struck a deal in 1667 with the Matinecock to buy land for a settlement that he and fellow colonists named Buckram. That name stayed for close to 200 years. In 1856 it became Locust Valley, a nod to the many locust trees in the area. The Matinecock name itself comes from an Algonquian word for "hilly ground."
The railroad turned the hamlet into a hub. A single-track extension of the Glen Cove Branch brought the Long Island Rail Road to Locust Valley on April 19, 1869, and the town stayed the end of the line until the tracks reached Oyster Bay in 1889. A commercial center formed around the station and the nearby crossing of Forest Avenue, Buckram Road and Birch Hill Road, and it grew to serve the Gold Coast estates in nearby Bayville, Centre Island and Lattingtown, along with Mill Neck, Matinecock, Muttontown and the Brookvilles.
By 1927, Wall Street tycoon Harrison Williams had a 150-acre estate called Oak Point on Pine Island in Bayville. His weekend guests got off at the Locust Valley station, and a fleet of Rolls-Royce cars often collected them, stopping in the hamlet for last-minute supplies. Williams was then considered the wealthiest American.
Locust Valley became shorthand for everything between Glen Cove and Oyster Bay. That wider community gave its name to an upper-class accent known as "Locust Valley Lockjaw." Clubs around town include Beaver Dam, The Creek, the Piping Rock Club and the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club.
